I’m sure a whole lot of people would agree with me that Whatsapp Mesenger has come to stay and has become a vital tool for our daily communication. There are times when you really want to read a senders message with no intention to reply immediately. A sender might begin to feel ignored when he notices that his messages have been read and yet no reply.
We all know the negative emotions and reactions that come with the feeling of being ignored; many atimes it is not as though we choose to ignore these people, it might just be that we are not disposed to reply to their messages yet, or maybe we really want to ignore them.
Whatever the case may be, I’ll tell you how you can read a Whatsapp message without the sender knowing; this way you’ll avoid getting anyone upset.
There are four methods which have proved worthy:
Method 1: Disabling ‘Read Receipts’ in your WhatsApp settings.
Method 2: Flight mode or Aeroplane Mode
Method 3: WhatsApp Android widget
Method 4: Notification bar peek
Whatsapp by default notifies both the sender and receiver within a conversation about the status of a message. Once a sender hits the send button or enter as the case may be, a single grey tick would mean that the message has been sent, double grey ticks would mean that it has been delivered and double blue ticks would mean that it has been read by the receiver.
For individual Whatsapp chats, this can be modified under the privacy settings, but such modification would have no effect in a group chat.
How To Read A Whatsapp Message Without The Sender Knowing: Disable ‘Read Receipts’
One of the easiest methods to read a Whatsapp message without notifying the sender is by disabling the ‘Read Receipts’ option.
To do this, launch Whatsapp on your device and navigate to Settings > Account > Privacy. Within this menu you should see a ‘Read Recipients’ option, disable the option by unchecking the box.

It is however important to note that Whatsapp was fair to both parties by creating this option. Once you disable the ‘Read Recipients’ option, people won’t know when you’ve read their messages and you also would not know when they’ve read yours. That’s fair enough!
How To Read A Whatsapp Message Without The Sender Knowing: Flight/Aeroplane Mode
If you’re like me I’m sure you’ll want to know when other people have read your messages even though you do not want them to know when you’ve read theirs; there is another method that makes this possible and this is by enabling ‘Flight Mode’ or ‘Aeroplane Mode’ on your device.
The idea behind this is that Flight/Aeroplane Mode turns off both your mobile network and wi-fi, making sure that your device is not connected to any network. Once you receive a message, before opening it enable fight mode on your device. This way Whatsapp would no longer be able to connect to its servers and cannot report back to the sender whether or not you have read their message. This way you can read a Whatsapp message without the sender knowing.
Once you have read the message, it is important to mark it as unread – How To Mark a Whatsapp Message as Unread – and then turn off your Flight Mode or Aeroplane Mode so that your device can have access to data connection.
In testing this method, different results were recorded among various devices; hence it is not as consistent as the method stated above. You may want to stick to the first method or try the next.
How To Read A Whatsapp Message Without The Sender Knowing: Whatsapp Android Widget
Disabling ‘Read Recipients’ is a two-way thing and the Flight Mode method seems stressful, there is however another trick that can be used, but its only applicable to Android Users only.
You can read a Whatsapp message without the sender knowing by using the Whatsapp widget. Add the Whatsapp widget to your home screen by holding down on a clear area of your screen and then choose ‘Widgets’. Scroll until you find the Whatsapp 4×2 widget, drag and place it where you want it to appear on your home screen.
This method is really effective. The widget displays messages and emoticons only; images, videos, voice notes are not supported. You can however reply to other messages you wish to without sending any notification to the sender you chose to ignore.
How To Read A Whatsapp Message Without The Sender Knowing: Notification Bar Peek
This is also another great method but that it would only allow you read partially if the message is lengthy.
You can always pull down the notification bar and read a Whatsapp message without the sender knowing, but you have to exercise extra care not to mistakenly open the message in a bid to expand the notification.
Whatsapp has become a great communication tool among individuals, friends, families, colleagues and even businesses today. Whatsapp is completely free to use and can be downloaded for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Phone at no charge.
